If you’re looking to dive into the fascinating world of mushrooms, ORISSA MAGIC MUSHROOM, India, is the perfect place to start. From bustling local markets to the serene forests, this region is a treasure trove of mushroom varieties, with plenty of opportunities to learn about their types and uses. I recently had the chance to visit Orissa and embark on an unforgettable mushroom expedition.
The magic mushrooms of Orissa are particularly noteworthy. This variety, known as Psilocybe cubensis, was first discovered in this region, which is nestled close to Nepal and Bihar. What sets the Orissa strain apart is its impressive size—some of the largest mushrooms recorded come from here, rivaled only by the Xapuri and South American strains. Plus, they pack quite a punch, making them some of the strongest mushrooms I’ve ever tried!
Our tour guide was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, leading us to some of the best spots for mushroom hunting. We kicked things off at the local market, where we sampled and bought a range of mushrooms. It was a sensory delight! We also paid a visit to a nearby mushroom farm, where we learned about the various types grown in the area and their uses in both cuisine and traditional practices.
Discovering Psilocybe Cubensis
The Psilocybe cubensis strain from Orissa is quite remarkable. These mushrooms can grow large, with caps that can reach up to 15 cm wide and stems that can extend to 10 cm long. Typically, the caps are white or light brown, while the stems are generally white as well. They have a mild, earthy flavor, making them a popular choice in Indian dishes.
Interestingly, this variety thrives best in elephant dung, which might sound unusual, but it helps produce some impressively large mushrooms. Unfortunately, there isn’t a wealth of information beyond these basic facts; many sources tend to repeat the same talking points.
The Best Variety to Grow
When it comes to growing mushrooms, the Golden Teacher strain of Psilocybe cubensis has been a long-time favorite among both growers and psychonauts. Growers appreciate the robust buds it produces, while those seeking a psychedelic experience often rave about the profound journeys these mushrooms can facilitate.

By far the most spiritual experience I’ve had with a mushroom! Awesome visuals, fractals, diverse entities, and a lot of third-eye imagery. Helps me contemplate and ponder the wonders of spirituality in order to go further into things that are very interesting to me. It can be a little intense if too much is consumed, as it is a very energetic shroom. Again, I I lay under the night sky, wrapped in a blanket, and had the most incredible ethereal experience: sound, images, and sensations all tuned into the breath of the universe. Wow!

My favourite strain for sure. Took roughly 2 and a half grams of these (normally a moderate dose for me) and had hours of strong, colourful, shimmering images. Every surface in my home was covered in complex gold tattoos, and the carpet appeared to have lovely designs etched into it. Rainbows and geometric forms are everywhere. Extreme visual strain. 10/10
